A young Simsbury couple died Wednesday evening, the apparent victims of a murder-suicide.
A young couple, who lived at the Meadows Apartments, were found by Simsbury Police, shot to death in their home Wednesday, Sept. 19 at 8:25 p.m., moments after a dispatcher heard gunshots during a 911 call from woman.
Their 18-month-old son was found by officers unharmed, according to Simsbury Police Capt. Nicholas Boulter.
Woman and Man knew each other from attending Canton High School together, according to Day’s mother, who lives in Canton. Day graduated in 2006, and her son with Wawrzyniak is staying with Day’s parents.
“I’ll never get over this,” said Day’s mother. “It’s unbelievably hard. Their relationship was not working out, and Beth was trying to move back home with us.”
In the 911 call, Day was telling the dispatcher her boyfriend was holding a gun at her, threatening to shoot her and himself, according to a press release. Police officers were dispatched to the scene, and the dipatcher then heard several gunshots, the report said.
The first Simsbury Police officer arrived at the apartment within 30 seconds of being dispatched.
“Officers from Avon and Simsbury assembled to make contact with the occupants of the apartment,” Boulter wrote. “They were unable to make contact with any occupants, but they heard the sound of a crying baby inside.”
When officers forced their way into the apartment, they found Day and Wawrzyniak dead, and their child uninjured.
Ken Peterson, a neighbor who has lived at the Meadows Apartments for about a year, said he had seen the couple with their baby just a few days before the shooting.
“They were so young, and I just saw them the other day with their baby,” Peterson said. “I never met them, so I didn’t know their names. I guess they pretty much kept to themselves. But I never heard them fight.”
Karen Jacobson, who lives across the walkway from the apartment the couple shared with their son, said she heard raised voices after 8 p.m., but no shots.
“I was sitting in my living room, watching baseball on television, when I heard the voices,” she said. “I just turned up the television.”
A Connecticut State Police crime lab truck pulled up about 11:25 p.m. on the walkway between her apartment and the one in which the couple was found, she said.
“It was here until about 5 a.m.,” she said. “It’s very sad. They were a young couple with a little boy. He always looked happy and I never heard them argue. I used to see them pushing him in a stroller that looked like a truck. I never heard him cry.”
Jacobson wondered about the toddler’s future.
“It’s such a shame,” she said. “I never knew their names, but it seemed like they were working. That poor boy’s going to have a terrible time. And he always seemed so happy.”
Simsbury’s last shooting fatality was in 2001, according to Boulter.
